Music applied to become so uncomplicated. You listened to it on the radio at no cost, but you didn’t get to say what will be played, and there have been plenty of commercials. When you went to a concert, you paid. And should you bought a record, tape or CD, you paid. Folks copied CDs to cassette tapes and passed them on to friends. That was just about as far as P2P music piracy got. Stealing music was whenever you shoplifted a CD or cassette from the record retailer, and it was quite clearly understood that it was “wrong.”
Possibly that is why a great number of folks who are older than say 30 think that downloading music is ethically incorrect. They remember that music is one thing that you simply spend for. They nonetheless download the music, not surprisingly. But they know they’re carrying out some thing they shouldn’t be undertaking.
But if you’ve discovered and come to love music inside the last decade, I do not see how it is possible to be anticipated to know when listening to recorded music is ok, and when it’s wrong.
Let’s put the law aside for a moment – this post is about carrying out the proper point. We’ve been hammered with messaging from the government as well as the music labels that downloading or listening to music online is stealing, unless you pay for it. We see the video clips ahead of films at the cinema saying its wrong. We read about lawsuits against twelve year olds for downloading music from BitTorrent. Our government is even prepared to threaten other sovereign nations over music piracy.
But more than the final handful of years the line has blurred to the point exactly where there really isn’t any line any extra. We can listen to no cost, on demand streaming music at MySpace Music and numerous other web sites. It is ok to do it at MySpace, but it is wrong to complete it at Project Playlist, simply because the appropriate contracts aren’t in spot? Just a few years ago any one listening to free of charge streaming music anyplace online was violating copyright and topic to being labeled unethical. Today, its no problem. And also you do not even need to listen to audio ads.
But downloading music, that is still wrong, suitable? Nope. In the event you live in China, you are able to download music legally from Google free of charge. No problem.
Above I mentioned I wanted to put the law aside for a moment. Now I’ll come back to it. Simply because the law, and especially the U.S. government’s willingness to perpetuate the absurdity of copyright law because it applies to recorded music, is all that the labels have left. No one in their suitable thoughts could formulate an argument that downloading music on the web is “wrong” at this point. All of the labels have left would be the law.
Eventually the reality with the World wide web will force the laws to adjust, also. One way or another the music labels will sooner or later surrender, and recorded music will be free.
Until it is actually, I refuse to feel guilty for downloading and sharing music. Each time I listen to a song, or share it having a pal, I’m carrying out the labels a favor. One that ultimately I should be paid for. Until that day comes, do not even consider trying to inform me that I’m carrying out one thing ethically incorrect when it is deemed fairly legal, using the labels’ blessing, in China.
